You just say “Hi”

I used to feel so alone in the city. All those gazillions of people and then me, on the outside. Because how do you meet a new person? I was very stunned by this for many years. And then i realized, you just say, “Hi.” They may ignore you. Or you may marry them. And that possibility is worth that one word. – Augusten Burroughs

I really like this quote, because it’s true. The only way to know people, even if it seems really hard, is to talk to them. Just one tiny word, “Hi”. Or maybe “excuse me, what time is it?”. And who knows, perhaps you never see them again. Or you can end up being best friends. You never know what a “Hi” is going to lead you to, its power, its possibilities are huge.

Everybody needs to talk to people, and no one is going to laugh at you. Forget about the fact that you are shy, or insecure. There’s only one way to get things, and it’s through courage. It may scare you, but if it’s worth it, do it. And if you realise it wasn’t worth it, well, then you’ll be able to face problems better than before. You’ll have experience. Making mistakes is not bad. Being a bit silly or feeling embarrased is not bad. We all have to learn how to live.

And if they ignore you, don’t worry. Then they weren’t the right ones. They don’t know what they’re losing, ‘cause baby, you are the only “you” in this world. You have your own way of saying “Hi” and introducing yourself to people. And believe me, for someone out there, the things you do when you meet somebody for the first time are just perfect.
